Comments about KidCo Gate Installation Kit:

This is just a piece of wood. It didn't come with hardward or anything. It was totally useless, and we didn't even end up using it. It was supposed to be lashed to the banister to avoid putting holes in it, but it said in the instructions that it would be more stable if drilled into the banister.

Comments about KidCo Gate Installation Kit:

We bought two of these installation kits for each gate as we had hollow walls on one side and a banister on the other. The kits allowed for us to kit the gate to our stairway, which required special installation. They did what they said they would and the straps are even holding one side of the gate very well. I had read a few reviews about using the straps but to date we have not had any isses.

On the bottom of my stair case I was unable to put a baby gate until now, I could not use a baby gate before because of the metal railing on one side. Now the baby gate is properly installed and secure.

Comments about KidCo Gate Installation Kit:

I used the kit for my stair case at the bottom. one side was drywall and could use the gate, but hte other was wrought iron. It attached easily to the iron and has held strong. The only abd part is the zip-ties. they are white and look junky. whish i could have ordered them in a different color. and also paint the wood before you install it to match your walls.

Comments about KidCo Gate Installation Kit:

I don't want to sound like I'm trashing the product, but this really is a case of set your expectations low and you won't be disappointed. I read all the reviews before purchasing, so I wasn't suprised when I received something that was little more than a stick of wood and some screws. You're mostly paying for conveience here. I *could* have gone to a hardware store and bought all the materials myself, but it would have been a hassle, likely requiring multiple trips, and probably wouldn't have saved much. As it was, I had everything I needed and - with some work - was able to get the gate up in one afternoon.

That said, the assembled kit is effective, just ugly as anything (two sticks of wood with a long screw fastening them together over my metal railings). Maybe some paint would help, but I think that it's just a sad fact of being a parent, as I've learned after visiting my in-laws' and friends' houses, that there's just about no pretty way of putting gates up. You just have to remind yourself that the safety of your child is what's important, and that the gates are "temporary."

For those of you with drywall, I couldn't figure out how nailing a block of wood to the drywall and then fastening the gate to the block of wood was any better than just screwing it all into the drywall. Just use drywall anchors. I got them from the banister guard kit also on this site.

Similarly, I got some zipties from the banister guard kit that were invaluable. OSA should include a few in the kit. The wood sandwich still has the ability to slide back and forth along my metal banisters, so the zip ties help make sure everything stays exactly as it should.

Comments about KidCo Gate Installation Kit:

We thought this was a great product, on paper, but when we installed it at the bottom of our stairs on the metal iron posts with our gate, it worked for about 3 days, then we noticed it was loose and the gate did not close well. After looking closer at it, the whole banister was loose and it costs us plenty to fix it. There was too much play in the wood and zip tie. The price is cheap but so it the product. Go with the velcro ones if you can fit it. We are now looking for another option for the bottom of the stairs.

All this is is a stick and two zip ties. [...] Instead of ripping people off with this product, why doesn't One Step Ahead have a suggestions/solutions page with helpful hints for parents, such as how to make one of these yourself? That would have been more helpful to me.

We used one for each gate at the bottom and top of our staircase. It works with different sized ballisters, even tapered ones. They work well with our two different gates and I love that the railing isn't damaged to install the gate. It makes it so much easier and safer to install and use the gates.

The screws are to soft and easily strip. Also the "rip-ties" are not sturdy enough to keep the boards from sliding. Concept is good, but materials provided could have been thought out a little better.

This wood strip is useful. But, for the price, it should come finished the same as the gate (white, if gate is white, stained if gate is stained, etc.).
The only benefit is that it is sanded.
Also it has no attachment hardware. You are on your own for that.
