Comments about Palicove Inc. Clear Banister Guard Kit:
I have been using this for 3 years now after I caught my then toddler with his body on the 'wrong side' of the banister and his head on the right side. I bet you can imagine how scarry that was!!! Anyway, after 3 years, I need to replace it because it is torn a bit from the older kids, but what do you expect from a temporary solution that is so inexpensive????If you want something that is "bullet-proof" then hire a contracter to reconfigure your staircase banister (a couple thousand dollars)- or go out and spend [$] plus on heavy duty plexiglass. I do agree that it is somewhat difficult to install- only because the holepunch is small- but like someone else said, using a drill instead will help to solve that issue...If you want a cheap, but workable solution, then invest in this product.
We put this on our banister and because of our banister construction didn't work so well in height. Because of the guard's length, it could not be "pre-punched" before attaching it to the posts. It did split rather easily when punching holes in it. Because of the size of the guard, and where it split along the punched holes, it also ended up being "wavy" and did not lay flat against the banister. Two suggestions I would have are having the banister guard pre-punched and grommetted for added strength and this would help prevent splitting. And, instead of the plastic zip ties, using a different type of tying system (velcro??). With all this said, it does work fine now that it has been installed and will prevent our grandchildren from falling through the banister.
This banister guard is as attractive as a guard of its function could be. I drilled holes instead of using a puncher which reduced tearing of the material. We also simply curled the ends around the last pole and refrained from drilling holes into the wall. This surely reduces the safety of the guard, but has stopped the possibility of toys being thrown through and eliminated our toddler holding onto the poles and pulling.
The plastic film is brittle and cracks when you either punch through it or drill through it. Ultimately, I was able to protect banisters that were spaced too large to be safe for my two little ones but it makes the job harder and makes it feel a little less safe knowing that the film is prone to cracking. I found that there was less cracking when you punch/drill with the protective film in place but it wasn't that much better than without the film.
The only difficult problem with this product was that with our banister you could not use the hole punch. My husband just used a sauter iron to melt hole into the barrier. Love this product! It isn't totally clear, but you can see thru it & my child loves that!
It was difficult to roll out the sheet and keep it taut
We have a large, rounded banister and this was extremely difficult to install. We found a similar webbed product at One Step Ahead that was much easier. This probably would have been fine on a straight banister.
I would buy this product again, it was easy to install, and it will keep my children safe from harm.
This product is difficult to install. First we had to find a way to cut it to size and then the plastic cracked upon installing ~
We were not at all pleased with the appearance of this product or the quality. After taking the plastic protective film off, it is very visible, and looks very cheap. It cracked in several places as we were installing it. I'm thinking it will last about a week before we remove it and look for something else. We bought it to protect our grandbaby from falling thru the banisters. We used a plastic mesh for our children, and I think that's what we will look for to replace this product.
I read some reviews about how difficult this product was, and how it was not actually clear. But I have a disagree. The only difficulty we had was the area in which we installed it. We installed this in our son's room in an open corner around 3 banisters. This was the perfect product and fit around them so well. And it is 100% clear. I can't imagine the product being any better. We've had it in place now for a few months. I do wonder how it will hold up after months of toddler pounding, but so far so good.Oh another thing, we did not bolt it into the wall as the instructions say to do - due to our condo rules - and have not had any problems. We kept it the extra couple of inches on either side and have taught our son to just avoid them.
This product is too flimsy. It could also be made of clearer material - and this is with the protective sheet taken off. The installation is pretty easy, but while punching holes the material would sometimes crack, etc., so that upon first installing it's already not looking too good. It seems to serve the intended purpose though.

Used this product to cover banister overlooking great room and steps. When my daughter and her young family arrived they were so relieved to see that I had covered the "worry" area in our house. First thing the 18 mo. old did was to go to the banister to look down but could do so safely.
Good product. Install was smooth as I used a drill to punch the holes needed for the plastic ties. The included hole puncher worked, but ties needed to be affixed in locations on the plastic outside the limited reach of the hole punch. Drill worked well and there were no other problems.
It is not perfectly clear. There is also a film that once removed it is a little clearer. This is a good solution for our needs.
